Glossary of Terms

This glossary of terms helps users understand the terminology used throughout the product. A user may see these terms on different pages, included in filters, within package notes or within reports.

Definition

Access Point

Refers to a location the package recipient can pickup their package, which may be a carrier office or third party partner

Action Request

Allows users to request an action that assists with package delivery

Address Line 1

Refers to the primary address line where a package will be delivered

Address Line 2

Refers to the secondary address line which may be an apartment number, suite number or any secondary information

Ambient Package

Refers to a package that does not require strict temperature control during shipping and storage

Analytics

Refers to reports or dashboards that combine data to provide performance or trend insight

Application Interface Agreement (API)

Refers to a mechanism that enable two software components to communicate with each other using a set of definitions and protocols

Arrived At Facility

Refers to the date/time a package arrives at a carrier facility

At-Destination

Refers to package arriving at local carrier facility responsible for final delivery

At-Risk

Refers to a package that is at risk of not meeting the expected delivery commitment

Automated Calls

Refers to consignees calls that are triggered by package delivery status or an exception

Bill of Lading (BOL)

Refers to a document issued by a carrier to a shipper that details type, quantity and destinations of good being shipped

Carrier

Refers to a company that specializes in transporting and delivering packages. They typically transport and deliver packages long distance

Carrier Account

Refers to the carrier account number used for shipping and billing purposes

Carrier Account Restrictions

Refers to certain limitations or regulations have been placed on a shipping account. These restrictions can prevent you from using specific services, shipping certain items, or even fully accessing your account

Carrier Local Facility

Refers to a location a carrier uses to sort and load packages before going out for delivery

Carrier Manifest Missing

Refers to the carrier has not received or cannot access the shipping manifest document associated with a particular shipment

Carrier Hub/Sort Facility

Refers to a distribution center or location where packages are sorted and processed for distribution by the carrier

Carrier Zones

  • Zone 1: 0-50 miles

  • Zone 2: 51-150 miles

  • Zone 3: 151-300 miles

  • Zone 4: 301-600 miles

  • Zone 5: 601-1,000 miles

  • Zone 6: 1,001-1,400 miles

  • Zone 7: 1,401-1,800 miles

  • Zone 8: 1,801+ miles

City

Refers to the city or town where the package recipient is located, forming part of the delivery address

Claim

Refers to carrier process a shipper may have to follow for package that is damaged, lost of missing content

Client Location

Refers to a physical location where shipments originate from

Commercial Address

Refers to an address of a business

Commit Date

Refers to the date by which the delivery partner commits to delivering the package

Communications

Refers to phone calls that may be sent, both human and automated to SMS or email notifications that may be sent

Consignee

Refers to the person or company designated to receive a shipped package

Courier

Refers to a company or person that is hired to deliver a package. They typically transport packages within a city or region

Courier Engagement

Refers to the process of ParcelShield working with a courier to support on-date package delivery based on defined rules of engagement

Courier Eligible

Refers to a package being eligible for courier engagement based on defined package values which may include cost, refrigerated, pack out type and signature required

Courier Network

Refers to a group of couriers that are part of a network that supports package delivery

Create Date

Refers to the date the package was imported into the platform

Currently Scheduled

Refers to the current expected delivery date

Customer Not Available

Refers to a recipient not being available for package delivery

Customer Pickup

Refers to a person picking up up a package at a carrier or third party location rather than it being delivered

Customer Reference Number

Refers to a reference field a shipper may populate at time of creating a shipping label

Data Source

Refers to method package was imported into the platform

Dashboard

Typically refers to a visual interface showing key data and performance for a period of time

Declared Value

Refers to the monetary value declared by a shipper to determine package value in case of loss or damage

Delayed

Refers to a package in route to a destination but has not arrived within the expected timeframe

Delivered

Refers to a phase of a package journey when the package makes it to a final destination

Delivered Date

Refers to the date the carrier delivers the package

Delivery Address

Address printed on the package label which includes name, address, city, state and zip code

Delivery Failure

Refers to a package that is not delivered, is 3 or more days past the original scheduled delivery date, and is not in the ParcelShield courier network

Delivery Partner

Refers to a company that specializes in transporting and delivering packages

Delivery Scan

Refers to a physical scan of a package that confirms the carrier delivered the package to the recipient

Delivery Service

Refers to the specific service level selected for the shipment, such as standard, expedited, same-day, or NFO

Delivery Window

Refers to the carrier estimated package/freight delivery timeframe

Departed Facility

Refers to the date/time a package leaves a carrier facility

Desired Delivery Date

Refers to the preferred date a package should be delivered based on package recipient or shipper needs

Digital Communications

Refers to electronic communications platform may send to package recipient via email or SMS/text

Dimensions

Refers to dimensions of a package and typically measure in length, width and height

Distance to Destination

Refers to the miles between the package location and final destination

Do Not Contact

Typically refers to package recipient not wanting to be contacted via phone for package questions or updates

Drop-Off Location

Refers to a location the package recipient can drop off their package, which may be a carrier office or third party partner

Drop-Off Scan

Refers to an initial scan when a package has been dropped off at a drop-off location

Engagement

Refers to involvement or interaction on a package on behalf of the shipper or recipient

Enhanced Courier Network

Refers to network of courier partnerships ParcelShield may use for courier engagement

Escalated

Refers to a package that may not meet the expected delivery commitment and requires a user to provide information, provide direction, and/or take action

Escalation Action

Refers to steps to be taken on a particular package

Estimated Duration

Refers to the expected time that will elapse from when the package is picked up to when it is delivered. This is also synonymous with time in transit

Estimated Rate

Refers to the estimated cost of shipping the package using the selected delivery method, which may include shipping fees, surcharges, and other related costs

Events

Refers to the quantity of package scans for a particular package

ETA

Typically refers to the estimated time when a shipment is expected to arrive at its destination

Exception

Refers to a package being temporarily delayed while in transit due to unavoidable circumstances

Exception Code

Refers to a carrier code that provides specific information about an exception or issue that occurred during the shipping process

File Transmission

Refers to the process of sending package data files via secure method

Freight

Refers to goods transported by a carrier, typically in bulk

High Temp Forecast

Refers to the highest temp forecasted for the package recipient location

Impacted Zip Alert

Refers to a communication sent that provides package destination information where there is a probability of service degradation due to weather or other events

Imported

Refers to packages that are visible in the product after an automated process brought data in from an external source

Incorrect Address

Refers to an address on a package label the carrier does not see as a valid delivery address that may cause challenges with package delivery

Inbound

Refers to packages shipped from a shipper (vendor) to a client location

Information Request

Allows users to gather additional information to assist with package delivery

In-Transit

Refers to the phase of a package journey when the package is in transit to it's destination but is not out for delivery

Issue Code

Refers to exception, issue or reason that caused a package to be delivered later than expected

Last Mile Delivery

Refers to the final leg of the transportation process when a package is being delivered to its final destination

Late by Day

Refers to a package missing scheduled delivery date that are already one or more days late

Lost Package

Refers to a package the carrier has lost in the delivery process

Manifest

Refers to a package that has been assigned a shipper label and tracking number to facilitate tracking

Manifest Date

Refers to the date a shipping label (tracking number) is created by the shipper

Manifested Not Shipped

Refers to a package where manifest data has been received by the carrier but has not been tendered (carrier does not have physical possession of the package)

Monitor

Refers to the process of tracking and observing a package journey from its point of origin to its destination

Next Flight Out (NFO)

Refers to a logistical service in which the dispatch of particularly time-critical shipments is required via commercial flight

No-Risk

Refers to packages that are undelivered and do not have a risk of being delivered on the date originally scheduled

Notifications

Alerts or messages that inform user of an update or indicate action is required

On Date

Refers to a package being delivered on the date it was originally scheduled for delivery

Opt Out

Typically refers to package recipient not wanting to receive digital/electronic communications

Order Number

Refers to a unique number that identifies an order placement

Origin Location

Refers to the address the package was shipped from or what the carrier has associated with the account

Origin Scan

Refers to a physical scan of a package that confirms the carrier has taken possession of it from the shipper

Originally Scheduled

Refers to the original carrier scheduled delivery date

Outbound

Refers to package shipped from a client location to a package recipient

Out for Delivery

Refers to phase of package journey where they package is in route to be delivered

Pack Out

Refers to how a package is packed prior to shipment which may include materials to keep the product below a certain temperature

Package Events

Refers to carrier scans on package. These may occur at pickup, at facility or at delivery destination

Package Hold

Refers to the process of carrier putting a package on hold for recipient pickup

Package Scan

Refers to a carrier or courier scanning the package label/bar code and information being visible in the platform

Package Trace

Refers to carrier research for a package that is not receiving package scan updates or hasn't made it to the package recipient in the expected timeframe

Package (contents) Value

Refers to the value of content inside the package that may be used for shipping insurance

Phone

The package recipients contact phone number. This may be a mobile number or Landline

Pickup Location

Refers to a location the package recipient can pickup their package, which may be a carrier office or third party partner

Planning

Portion of product that allows user to evaluate shipment and delivery options for a package

Potential Delay

Refers to package(s) that may experience a delivery delay based on carrier information

Pre-Delivery Call

Refers to an automated call, email or text to a package recipient reminding them a package is going to be delivered

Pre-Transit

Refers package data being available but the carrier (delivery partner) hasn't taken possession of the package

Proof of Delivery (POD)

Refers to documentation that provides evidence a package has reached its intended destination

Quantum View® Reference Fields

Refers to package reference fields that may be populated when a UPS label is created by the shipper

Real Time Dashboard

Refers to platform dashboards where user have real time parcel logistics visibility

Recipient

Person or business receiving a package at the final destination address

Recipient Location

Refers to the final destination where a shipment or package is to be delivered. It is the address or site associated with the intended recipient, such as a home, business, or designated delivery point

Redirect Package

Refers to the carrier being asked deliver a package to a different destination than the original address

Refrigerated Package

Refers to a package that contains cooling materials so the product maintains a specific temperature range during shipment and storage

Reference Fields

Refers to series of data fields that may be associated with a carrier label

Regional Carrier

A carrier that is primarily focused transporting and delivering packages within a geographic region

Remove From Protection

Refers to removing a package from ParcelShield Protection level service

Remove Signature Requirement

Refers to asking the carrier to deliver a package rather than obtaining a signature

Report

Refers to a document that presents information in an organized format for a specific audience and purpose

Rescue

Refers to engaging a courier to support on-date package delivery

Re-iced

Refers to a package that has been re-iced to ensure product is viable upon delivery

Request Future Delivery

Refers to asking the carrier to deliver a package at a future date rather than original commit date based on package recipient availability

Residential Address

Refers to an address that is a home or private residence

Reship

Refers to reshipping a product because the original shipment was damaged or lost

Return Package

Refers to a package a shipper may request returned via a carrier process

Return to Sender

Refers to process of carrier returning a package to the shipper which may be damaged or no longer needed

Risk

Refers to potential issues identified that could affect the timely and safe delivery of the package, such as weather events, traffic conditions, or operational disruptions

Risk Forecast

Refers to a predication related to the likelihood of a shipment or delivery failing to meet its planned or committed date due to external or environmental factors such as weather, natural disasters, or infrastructure issues

Scheduled

Refers to packages that are expected to deliver on a specific day. This may be an update to the originally scheduled date

Service Level

Refers to the package delivery timeframe that was selected. This may include next day, second day or ground service

Ship Date

Refers to the date on which a package is schedule to be shipped from the origin location

Shipper (Sender)

Refers to a company or person that sends the package to a recipient

Shipper Address/Location

Refers to the location where the shipment originated

Shipper Account

Refers to the carrier account number used for billing purposes

Shipping Costs

Refers to the expenses incurred for shipping a package

Shipping Instructions

Refers to directions by the shipper detailing how to handle package during transportation

Signature Required

Refers to delivery instructions a shipper added to a package that require a person to sign for the package at time of delivery. The requirement could be for direct, indirect or adult signature

SMS (Short Message Service)

Refers to text messages that may be sent to package recipients during the carrier delivery process

Single Sign On (SSO)

Refers to single sign-on authentication process that allows a user to access multiple applications with a single set of login credentials

Special Instructions

Refers to delivery instructions for a package in addition to the name, address, city, state and zip code

State

Refers to the state or province where the recipient is located, forming part of the delivery address

Stop Monitoring

Refers to stopping any monitoring activities on a package before it's arrived a destination

Temperature Alert

Refers to communication sent that provides package destination information on high, medium and low temperatures

Temp Requirement

Refers to the product temperature sensitivity needs at time of shipment or storage

Tendered Date

Refers to the date a package is handed to a carrier or courier for delivery

Tracking No

A unique number assigned by a delivery partner to a specific package that allows for tracking and monitoring

Transit Stage

Refers to primary carrier stages of a package including pre-transit, in-transit, at-destination, out for delivery and post-delivery

Undelivered

Refers to packages that are in route to a destination but has not been delivered yet

User Credentials

Refers to unique login and password users receive to login to the platform

Voided Label

Refers to a carrier label that is no longer needed and being cancelled

Volume

Refers to total package count for a period of time

Watching

Refers to a user adding a package to a list to monitor the package journey and to, optionally, receive notifications related to delivery status

Weight

Refers to the package weight associated with the package label

Zip3 (3-digit zip code)

Refers to the first 3-digits of a zip code that represents larger areas around the nation

Zip Code

Refers to the postal code where the recipient is located, forming part of the delivery address
